Bedroom Remodel: The Closet Before

We have an Victorian in San Francisco, built around the 1900s, and the closets were clearly a jury-rigged addition put in sometime around mid-century. The closets are 30″ wide and about five feet deep. Someone tried to make the closet more useful by putting a rod down one side (but that unfortunately required them putting a rod across the doorway) and a shelf on top of it (which makes the closet feel even smaller and is so high you can’t see what’s on it) and hooks down the other side (which you can’t get into the closet to reach). Shoes go on a small shelf in the close which gets almost entirely hidden by hanging clothes.

Making just one closet better was a big challenge and ended up taking a couple of months, during which time we slept in the office to avoid the paint fumes. I’ll post the after pictures tomorrow!
